ALEX KATZ "FRANCES" DRAWING, 1977
Alex Katz (b. 1927) has been dedicated to art-making since the 1950's, establishing his signature 'flat' figurative style in the mid-1960s. Over the succeeding decades, Katz has kept the tradition of figurative painting alive as it had gone out of style.
Drawing is central to Katz's process and practice. With delicate and precise mark-making, Katz creates his drawings as both an experience and a resemblance. Through carefully created line, tone, and surface, his drawings capture the present tense. Katz's renderings are clear--his seeing and drawing a single, fluid act.
In this drawing, the subject--Frances--is captured by profile. Katz has concentrated the details on her eyes and slightly parted lips, rendering them with deep lines and dimensional shading. Her sweeping hair, neck, and shoulders fade delicately into the background, flowing out from the facial focal point of the composition.
With thick, even lashes and a slight smile in her eyes, the subject emits a pleasant demeanour. This graphite composition is an exquisite example of Katz's delicate and sure hand.
