
ARNALDO POMODORO "IMMAGINE TRASVERSALE" 1974
Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926-2025) was a leading figure in Italian postwar sculpture, celebrated for his rigorous exploration of geometric form and material presence.
In the 1950s Pomodoro developed a distinctive sculptural language that drew critical attention for its symbolic density and architectural precision. By the early 1960s, Pomodoro turned decisively toward fully realized geometric forms; Spheres, discs, columns, pyramids, and cubes were rendered in burnished bronze and systematically fractured, corroded, or excavated.
This tension between immaculate exterior surfaces and internal fragmentation is central to Pomodoro's oeuvre. In 1966, a commission for a monumental sphere at Expo in Montreal marked a pivotal shift toward large-scale public sculpture for the artist, and established the Sphere Within Sphere as one of his defining motifs.
"Immagine Trasversale" exemplifies Pomodoro’s commitment to relief sculpture through structure, texture and depth. While the contrast between the textured bronze and smooth mirrored steel is stark, they both offer dimension in their own way. The multiple planes enhance this interplay and create further depth. This interesting multiple furthers Pomodoro's interrogation of form, space, and material. When an artist is frequently confronting architecture, it is inevitable that functionality becomes an area of concern...since this sculpture can also function as a mirror.
Pomodoro’s monumental spheres, columns, and disks have been installed in major urban and institutional sites worldwide, including the Vatican Museums, the United Nations Plaza in New York, and city squares from Milan to Los Angeles.
