CAIO FONSECA "PARIS DRAWING" 1992
Caio Fonseca (b. 1959) is an American artist whose practice is rooted in lyrical abstraction.
Known for creating balanced compositions with tonal harmonies, Fonseca is an artist deeply inspired by the spaces he inhabits. While he grew up in New York, Fonseca spent much time traveling and studying in Europe during the 80s and 90s. This time informed his artistic style, as he worked within the bounds of Neo Expressionism (as opposed to a broader movement toward conceptualism that was becoming popular in America).
Striving beyond a graphic statement, Fonseca creates cumulative living surfaces that are unquestionably made by hand. Influenced strongly by music, his works come together in a visual rhythm, upholding a unique but intangible spirit.
His process involves layering, as he revisits surfaces from different angles, moments, and with different materials. This creates not only a textural depth but a rhythm and relationship that is balanced and intentional. It's not unusual for Fonseca to title his works based on where they were executed.
While made with ink, this work on paper evokes the signature layering and depth of his paintings. Overlapping elements engage with each other, with the ink's opacity revealing the artist's hand. The viewer experiences visual depth as they piece together the painted elements, while simultaneously feeling the artist's spatial experience at the time of creation.
Fonseca's work is held in numerous public and private collections including: The Met, The Brooklyn Museum, The MoMA, and The Whitney, in New York; the Smithsonian and the Hirshhorn, in Washington, DC; the IVAM, Valencia, Spain; among many others.
