CARROLL DUNHAM "UNTITLED" MIXED MEDIA ON WOOD, 1983

Carroll Dunham (b. 1949) is a contemporary American artist best known for his distinctive fusion of abstraction and figuration. He rose to prominence in the early 1980s in New York City and was part of a new generation of artists who returned to painting with an idiosyncratic approach to representation.

Throughout Dunham's career, his artwork is instantly recognizable across all mediums, regardless of whether it leans towards abstraction or figuration, due to his distinctive use of cartoon-like or graffiti-inspired shapes. This rare drawing on wood panel exemplifies this unique stylistic approach.

Some of his preferred or even "signature" shapes recall human orifices or sexual organs, yet simultaneously they can be interpreted as spontaneous mark-making recalling Surrealist abstraction.

Carroll Dunham is collected in depth by many major American museums. Institutions such as the MoMA (NYC) and the Whitney Museum have significant holdings of Dunham's work. Dunham's work can also be found in the permanent collection of the Tate (UK) and the Art Institute of Chicago, to mention a few.

A new generation discovered the artist because of his daughter, Lena Dunham (the creator of the HBO series GIRLS)
