CHARLES PACHTER "HORIZON BARN" PAINTING, 2004

CHARLES PACHTER "HORIZON BARN" PAINTING, 2004

Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon.

While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with the American or British artists associated with Pop Art, his voice is resoundingly charming, singular, and uniquely Canadian.

The barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. His series of barns perfectly demonstrates his signature graphic style, displaying a quintessential Canadian landscape that is recognizable around the world.

In this exemplary painting, a paradigm from the "Barn" series, Pachter uses a rich palette of royal blue, turquoise, navy, cornflower, and a hint of salmon to depict a broad swath of sky. Is this sky tumultuous or calm and hazy? Pachter admitted to referencing the expressionistic leanings of the Group of Seven when creating his Barn paintings of these dramatic skies.

This painting is also notable and impressive for its wide format, as this is not a typical canvas size for the artist.

Pachter's work is represented in both public and private collections across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Portrait Gallery of Canada, The Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Pachter holds the prestigious position of Officer of the Order of Canada and is also a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal.
