CHARLES PACHTER "PINK PREPARATORY FLAG", 1981

In the Spring of 1981, Charles Pachter began working on his most iconic and celebrated series: the Painter Flag.

Decades before Photoshop, Pachter went around Toronto taking photos of Canadian flags in the wind.

Before he finalized the compositions on canvas, he used his photographs either cutting out abstracted versions or painting directly over the photographs.

Caviar20 was fortunate to find a small number of these preparatory works in the artist's archives.

We are excited to be offering these unique early examples of Pachter's famous Painted Flag. This work in particular is set on a distinctive grapefruit background, making it a stand-out from the series.

For a young collector interested in a unique Pachter this work presents a fantastic opportunity to acquire an affordable but important work from the artist.

While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with Jim Dine and David Hockney, his style is resoundingly charming, singular and uniquely Canadian. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Painted Flag series.
