DAN CHRISTENSEN "SKINNY" 2005
Highly recognized as a foremost American Post-War artist, Dan Christensen (1942-2007) established his career at a young age. Born in the USA, Christensen moved from Nebraska, to study a BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1964. Following this study, Christensen moved to New York, where his career immediately blossomed.
Christensen began exhibiting in New York in 1966 and achieved success with his unique lyrical Abstract Expressionism, winning numerous awards throughout his career. In the late 1960’s Christensen was championed by renowned critics such as Clement Greenberg, as one of the most original abstract painters, which resulted in his works being placed in many major museum collections, such as the Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum, the MET, the Moma, and the Albright-Knox Gallery. Today, Christensen is widely recognized as a brave experimentalist and leading figure in the abstraction and gestural painting movements of the 20th century.
One of the first to do so, Christensen began using spray guns, window-washing squeegees, rakes, blasters and house painting rollers in pursuit of applying paint in new ways. He also used sticks and brush-ends to cut into thickly applied paints. Using these unusual techniques he achieved incredible layered results that produce colors that seems to shimmer and glow.
Skinny is an exemplary painting from the later years of Christensen’s career and life. Dark navy and blacks blend together to form an intense background, over which bright lines of paint are laid across. The burnt oranges, pastel greens, and richly hued blues spiral together forming an iconic Christensen swirl. The paint is allowed to drip off the page and appear in small spots outside of the frame indicated by the square of the background color. Other saturated tones appear in brief, accenting the corners and drawing viewers’ eyes around the page’s entirety.
Throughout the duration of his career, Christensen embraced the methods and concepts underlying Abstraction and Colour Field painting. Over the course of 40 years, he was devoted to exploring the limits, range, and possibilities of paint and pictorial form. Christensen’s innate curiosity initiated relentless experimentations that remained consistent throughout the duration of his practice.
Over the course of Christensen's lengthy career, he had numerous solo exhibitions in both galleries and renowned institutions across America and beyond. His works can be found in museums including the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Met, the MoMA, and the Albright-Knox Gallery, among many others.
