DAN CHRISTENSEN "UNTITLED (BLUE BACK)", 2005
Dan Christensen (1942-2007) was born and raised in Cozad, Nebraska, and received his BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1964.
Christensen is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost color abstractionists. Over the course of forty years, he was devoted to exploring the limits, range, and possibilities of paint and pictorial form.
After the 1990's, Christensen continued to focus on experimenting with different forms of washing, spraying, and layering colors over top of each other. The works from Christensen's late period combine the gestural drama of Abstract Expressionism with the stained surface look popularized by the color field artists.
Expressive in its simplicity, "Untitled (Blue Back)", is an iconic example of the evolution of abstract expressionism Christensen pursued throughout his practice. The color seems to be almost draped, or dripped across the page, contrasting with a dark and alluring background. The densely painted lines are a poignant example of the swirling line-work Christensen is so highly recognized for. This work’s unusual color palette offers striking brush strokes in muted, saturated tones; akin to other acrylic on paper works created during this time period, (example: Eve’s Garden, 2005).
Christensen began exhibiting in New York in 1966 and achieved success at an early age, winning numerous awards along his career. His work appears in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions and is today represented in prestigious institutions, such as the Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum, the MET, the MoMA, and the Albright-Knox Gallery, among many others.
