EDWARD BURTYNSKY "SILVER LAKE OPERATIONS #2" AUSTRALIA, 2007

Edward Burtynsky is one of Canada’s most acclaimed photographers.

He is well-known for his captivating large-scale photographs documenting the ramifications of industrial production on the environment. Burtynsky's work often presents a tension between wonder and desecration, reminding us of our simultaneous dependence and concern for the planet.

This image is an aerial photograph of Lake Lefroy in Western Australia, from the "Mining" series. The photograph offers a topographic portrait alongside a rugged, gritty, and challenging aura emitted from the labour and dust that changed these lands permanently. It is also notable for its fantastic palette of squid-ink black (along the horizon) and range of greys, whites and camels punctuated by central forms of amber and rust.

Burtynsky's work is represented in over 50 museum collections around the world ranging from The National Gallery of Canada, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Bibliothèque National, Paris.
