GENERAL IDEA "NAZI MILK" 1979

General Idea was founded in 1967 in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, they addressed a broad range of social issues, including consumerism, media consumption and the AIDS epidemic.

One of their most iconic and confrontational works is “Nazi Milk,” a paradigm of how they unflinchingly explored taboo subjects with humor and a touch of absurdity. It continues one of their recurring motifs from the ’70s – drinks with magical, transformative powers.

The image features Billy, a young blond man depicted against an orange background. This idealized Aryan boy raises a large glass of milk to his lips, which already has a Hitler-like milk moustache. He looks suggestively at the viewer, exuding several conflicting messages – do consumer products seduce the masses and convince them to consume political ideologies?

This rare offset lithograph was created in parallel to Art Basel 1979 and marked an incredibly fruitful period for them, as they were quickly gaining recognition and exposure throughout Europe.

This work is included in the collection at MoMA.
