GENERAL IDEA "ORGASM RENEWAL PROJECT" 1972
In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond.
The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They worked across a wide range of media including photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installations, multiples, and performance.
"Orgasm Renewal Project" is a paradigm of General Idea's wry humor, light-hearted parody, and general mischief. It also highlights their early engagement with mail art. The work features a 1972 record log of AA Bronson's cyclical attempt to repeat his orgasms at the same date and time as documented in his completed "Orgasm Energy Chart" from the year prior.
The piece was produced as a mailer in the form of a press release for General Idea's FILE Megazine, an appropriation of LIFE Magazine. "Orgasm Renewal Project" was part of a larger 1970-71 project titled "Orgasm Energy Chart", which invited participants to partake in recording their actions as well. This work was reissued in 1995 and hand-signed by AA Bronson.
