HAROLD TOWN "CLOUD FACTORY" MIXED MEDIA, c. 1984

Harold Town (1924-1990) is renowned across Canada for his eclectic and dynamic body of work.

In the 1950s, Town established his reputation with a series of abstract monotypes (called "Single Autographic Prints"). He would exhibit these works at the Venice Biennale to great fanfare in Europe and at home. By the 1960s, he was considered the most famous artist in Canada. Over the proceeding decades Town would regularly pivot and reinvent his style and aesthetic. One constant was his passion and dedication to drawing.

"Cloud Factory" is an intimate and surreal illustration created in the last chapter of the artist's career, when this playful/groovy aesthetic debuts. This specific illustrative style is evident in several works from this period, and published in a whimsical children's book in 1987 entitled, "Murphy the Wonder Dog."

This fantastical drawing is realized in a playful palette of cherry red, lilac, sky blue, and canary yellow, framed with thick black contours. An industrial valve releases a billowing cloud of whimsical colors, twisting and curling in a whimsical display that encapsulates the artist's charming imagination.

Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York).
