HAROLD TOWN "EARLY MORNING WITH HOKUSAI" SAP, 1955

Harold Town (1924-1990) is renowned across Canada for his eclectic and dynamic body of work.

In the 1950s, Town established his reputation with a series of abstract monotypes (called "Single Autographic Prints"). He would exhibit these works at the Venice Biennale to great fanfare in Europe and at home. By the 1960s, he was considered the most famous artist in Canada.

These unique, hand-pressed works stood in contrast to the editions that traditional printmaking produces. Instead, Town used printmaking materials in a highly original and spontaneous way.

This complex pastel-hued example of a "Single Autographic Print" is Harold Town at his finest. The muted somewhat transparent colors merge and overlap in a horizontal gradient creating a hazy, almost impressionistic abstract surface. Interestingly, the title of this work makes reference to Katsushika Hokusai (the legendary Japanese printmaker), a connection that invites the viewer to explore the atmospheric qualities in this work.

Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York).
