JACK BUSH "FLIP" GOUACHE, 1969
Jack Bush (1909-1977) is one of Canada’s most successful abstract artists of the 20th century. Beginning in the 1960's, he achieved international recognition for his contribution to color-field painting.
A graduate of Toronto’s OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design), and a key member of the Painters Eleven, Bush was influential on the developing art scene of Toronto in the 1960s and 70s. Bush represented Canada at the 1967 Sao Paolo Biennale, and the Art Gallery of Ontario toured a retrospective of his work in 1976.
During these two decades, Bush achieved commercial and critical success in New York (and beyond) and was praised and promoted by the esteemed art critic, Clement Greenberg. Because of their connection, Bush befriended other notable color-field artists including Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland.
"Flip" is representative of Bush's style from the late 1960s. Like the best of his work, it is defined by strong lines, swathes of color and movement, and powerful simplicity. From about 1960-1971, Bush was producing much work using gouache on paper.
Many of his 1960s and 1970s paintings feature curved, looping, or arcing strokes that give the impression of rotation or flipping. These hint spatial relationships and visual movement within the composition. See another example here. Revealing both passion and restraint, this work on paper is a paradigm of his oeuvre.
While Bush worked frequently on paper, as both preparation for canvases and for creating complete independent works, this piece is notable for its large size and impressive format.
In 2004, a comprehensive catalogue was published: Jack Bush Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonné contains four volumes that span fifty years of paintings (1909-1977).
