JACK YOUNGERMAN "ALEXIS' FLOWER" GOUACHE, 1960
We are excited to be offering this exemplary and impactful gouache on paper by one of Caviar20's favorite mid-century American artists: Jack Youngerman.
This work is a striking example of Youngerman's signature aesthetic; abstractions that flirt with botanical forms.
Jack Youngerman (1926–2020) is known for his powerful and graphic compositions that alternate between pure abstraction and highly stylized depictions of flowers or other elements from nature.
Youngerman often synthesizes the best characteristics of Robert Motherwell and Ellsworth Kelly creating something highly original and confident. Youngerman's work always feels fresh, vibrant and optimistic. The artist has had a prolific career with major museum shows across the United States and internationally, including at the Guggenheim and MoMA.
Youngerman studied in Paris in the late 1940's on the G.I. Bill and was greatly influenced by the European modernists, notably the cutout shapes of Jean Arp and the saturated colors and stylized florals of Henri Matisse. He worked alongside Ellsworth Kelly in both Paris and New York City, their careers and artistic growth happening in tandem.
This work has a fascinating provenance. Our client acquired it from the Alexis Gregory Foundation. Gregory was an important patron of the Frick Collection, a member of Sotheby's Advisory Board and involved with several museums including the Metropolitan Museum and the Fogg Museum. However he is best-known as the founder of Vendome Books. Click here to read Architectural Digest's obituary.
