KOSSO ELOUL "ELUDING" LITHOGRAPH, 1971

Caviar20 is excited to offer another example of Kosso Eloul's precise and fascinating prints.

Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is renowned as one of Canada’s foremost sculptors, he also did a small number of prints, with some of the top printing studios (such as Gemini in Los Angeles), in the early 1970's. These works are highly sought after today as the images encapsulate the spirit, aesthetic and forms of his three-dimensional works.

Eloul was born in Israel but educated in the United States. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (under Frank Lloyd Wright) and later at the Chicago School of Design (with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy). He would represent Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959. In the late 1960's he would settle in Toronto and became known for his large outdoor sculptures. Today, one can find his sleek geometric works across Toronto in numerous important public locations

In many ways, his formal minimalism and attention to stripped back geometry were precursors for both Richard Serra and Joel Shapiro.

"Eluding II-B" is an outstanding work that creates unbelievable tensions and paradoxes with simple lines. Movement outward from the centre of the work commands attention. This work demonstrates Eloul's dedication to "a search for the capture of the illusions, for the implied motion, for potential movement in shape or in line."

Many major institutions have examples of his work, both prints and sculptures, in their permanent collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the Israel Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mention a few.
