KOSSO ELOUL "ISTORZO" SCULPTURE, 1989

Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto and beyond.

In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto by Eloul,  his works can be found in many other prominent public spaces around the world from California to Israel.

Eloul was born in Israel but educated in the United States. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (under Frank Lloyd Wright) and later at the Chicago School of Design (with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy).

He represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959. In the late 1960's he settled in Toronto and became known for his large outdoor sculptures. In many ways he was a precursor for both Richard Serra and Joel Shapiro.

"Istorzo" is a paradigm of his work in his signature brushed aluminum; yet domestically proportioned. From each vantage point, no matter on which side the sculpture is placed, it appears different, more dynamic and intriguing. While the sculpture is pictured on a base, it can also be hung directly on the wall.

Many major institutions have examples of his work in their permanent collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the Israel Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mention a few.
