LOUISE NEVELSON "SKY GATE I" CAST RELIEF, 1982

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. There has been a renewed interest and appreciation for her extensive body of work. In 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of her signature wall sculptures.

Last summer, during the Venice Biennale, a solo exhibition entitled "Persistencecommemorated the 60th anniversary of her presentation at the 1962 American Pavilion.

While Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, she was also a highly experimental printmaker.

In this work, “Sky Gate I,” Nevelson used a cast paper technique where paper fiber and pulp fills a mold to create a relief. The depth and dimensions are similar to her work in sculpture, completed in her signature monochromatic white.

Unlike her other paper pulp relief prints, such as Morning Haze, this piece has a slight heather effect as the color is closer to a warm cloud white with very subtle flecks of blue and grey.

“Sky Gate I” can be found in several prominent museum collections, including the MoMA and the United States Library of Congress.
