MARCEL DZAMA "TOO TIRED, SHELLY" DRAWING, 2000.
With his unmistakable version of contemporary Surrealism, Marcel Dzama is one of the most successful contemporary Canadian artists. Born in Winnipeg in 1974, Dzama had an international reputation by the time he was 30.
In the 1990s, as one of the founding members of the Royal Art Lodge, Dzama contributed to the renaissance of figurative art while simultaneously putting Winnipeg on the map as a center for Canadian creativity.
Dzama's works are instantly recognizable for their bizarre subject yet friendly style. He often takes banal scenes or characters and injects them with menacing, eerie, or twisted details that can border on the absurd.
In this untitled drawing (aka "Shelly") we find two strange characters in a domestic setting, evocative of a comic-book or graphic novel set in the 1940s. Like the best of Dzama's work, the viewer is drawn in and asked to assemble a narrative.
Who is this dapper alien-esque man notifying Shelly he won't be attending the dance? Who is the beautiful woman in a robe next to him? And what is their relationship? The finely detailed interior and characters force one to beg the ultimate question: what is happening off the page...?
While Caviar20 has handled a number of Dzama's works, this is the first we've offered that has the inclusion of text.
Marcel Dzama's work can be found in a host of prestigious public and private collections including Paris' Centre Georges Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the MoMA, and Le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. He is particularly favored by celebrity collectors including Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey, and Steve Martin.
