In 2007, Peter Doig (b. 1959) became a household name when his painting “White Canoe” sold for $11.3 million at auction, setting the record at the time for the highest auction price by a living European artist. And if that number sounds surprising, his paintings continue to surpass that record; most recently in November 2021, when "Swamped" sold for $39.8 million at auction.
Sales records aside, by the age of 50, Doig had major retrospectives at the Tate Britain, the Paris Museum of Modern Art, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Needless to say, he is an artist with major international acclaim.
Doig’s imagery has attracted fans from all corners of the world. Not surprisingly, the artist has been influenced by his own international experiences, having lived in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Trinidad.
"Gondolas" comes from a series of nine photographs created by the artist that offers a glimpse into his creative process.
While Doig could be associated with landscape painting, his interest in leisure and sports enable him to help evolve the genre. His landscapes go beyond mere scenery, often presenting elements of recreation and play in his distinct contemporary expressionist style.
In this image, Doig skillfully frames a group of illuminated gondola lifts against a backdrop of dense, dark woodland. Immersed in a dry summer landscape, Doig captures the ski equipment in off-season, hovering in place as if time has come to a standstill. Seasonal contrast appears to be an important and recurring theme in this series, as evident here.
Throughout his career, Doig has created a limited number of editioned works. To our knowledge, this is his first and only release of photographs. Not only is this from the first chapter of his illustrious career but also released in a very limited edition of 12.
Doig's works can be found in prominent public collections globally, including the Tate Modern (London), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the National Gallery of Canada.
