In 2007, Peter Doig (b. 1959) became a household name when his painting “White Canoe” sold for $11.3 million at auction, setting the record at the time for the highest auction price by a living European artist. And if that number sounds impossible, a number of his paintings has surpassed that record, including most recently in November 2021, when "Swamped" sold for $39.8 million at auction.
Sales records aside, by the age of 50, Doig had major retrospectives at the Tate Britain, the Paris Museum of Modern Art, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.
Doig’s imagery has attracted fans from all corners of the world. Not surprisingly, the artist has been influenced by his own international experiences, having lived in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Trinidad.
"Paragon" features two Fauvist figures engaged in a game of cricket on a vast and nearly formless beach. An onlooker (or perhaps, a third participant) looms from a distance, their ghostly figure blending into the ethereal environment.
Echos of colonization in the Caribbean often hover in Doig's work. Cricket, a vestige of the British Empire, is an iconic and often referenced symbol for Doig, with its ties to colonization...but also a motif for leisure, entertainment, and camaraderie.
