RICHARD DIEBENKORN "DOUBLE X" WOODCUT, 1987
Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) is a renowned American painter and printmaker. Diebenkorn is celebrated for his work across abstraction and figuration, moving between the two styles over the course of his career.
Beginning his career in the mid-1940s, Diebenkorn moved from San Fransisco to Woodstock where he responded to the post-war cultural shift that ushered in abstract expressionism in New York and beyond.
Dedicating nearly a decade to abstract expressionism, Diebenkorn gained prominence for his work before abruptly changing course. He began to explore figuration and become part of the first generation of the Bay Area Figurative Movement.
Completed in 1987, "Double X" marks the artist's return to abstraction in the last chapter of his oeuvre, when he moved between geometric and lyrical styles. Serving as a pared-down example, this work is a unique synthesis of Diebenkorn's exploration of abstraction, making it an excellent output from the last decade of his career.
Today, Diebenkorn's work is enjoyed in numerous international collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, LACMA (Los Angeles), Centre Pompidou, and Albertina (Vienna), among others
