ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG "AQUAFIX" PHOTOLITHOGRAPH, 1981
Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is revered as one of the most innovative American pop artists - more avant-garde than Warhol, and more audacious than Jasper Johns.
For much of his practice there is an element or spirit of collage in his work whether there is a mix of newspaper clippings, photographs or ephemera. This diversity and assortment of content and image is an innovation not only pushed the boundaries of Pop Art but also echoed the multimedia techniques pioneered by the Cubists in the early 20th century.
In “Aquafix” Rauschenberg takes a pared-back approach, layering three disparate images in a vertical composition. The artist thoughtfully juxtaposes organic textures with theatrical and ornate details, creating a dialogue between raw, natural elements and the possibilities of human creativity.
"Aquafix" is represented in the collections at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
Today, Rauschenberg's work is included in public collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art (NYC), Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain), and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) to name a few.
