ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG "FOR KENNEDY", 1994

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG "FOR KENNEDY", 1994

Robert Rauschenberg is revered as one of the most innovative American pop artists - more avant-garde than Warhol, more audacious than Jasper Johns.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Rauschenberg was a dedicated activist, lending his voice and practice to various social, political, and charitable activities during his lifetime.

"Americana" is a major and consistent theme in Robert Rauschenberg's oeuvre. The artist embraces it, expounds on it, subverts it, and dissects it. It's not surprising that political elements frequently appear throughout his practice, throughout each decade.

Created in support of Edward (Ted) Kennedy's 1994 senate campaign, this evocative print is a fantastic example of Rauschenberg's politically-minded aesthetic. Rauschenberg was a long-time supporter of the Kennedys, starting with his deep admiration for John F. Kennedy in the 1960s, whose image subsequently made cameos throughout the artist's oeuvre.

This complex and patriotic image is a testament to Rauschenberg's unwavering socio-political engagement. Rich, layered images of the American Flag fill the sheet, demonstrating Rauschenberg's iconic collage work and signature aesthetic.

Today, Rauschenberg's work is included in public collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art (NYC), Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain),  and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) to name a fewClick here to read about the Rauschenberg estate is preserving and promoting his legacy in the US.
