RYAN MCGINLEY "TYPHA" 2017
Ryan McGinley (b. 1977) is arguably the most renowned photographer of his generation. In 2003 at 25 years of age, McGinley became the youngest artist to ever have a solo show at the Whitney.
Over the past two decades, McGinley has proven himself to be the successor to both Nan Goldin and Larry Clark with a unique documentary style that portrays the idealisms and realities of a generation. His work captures the optimism, rebellion and hedonism experienced by friends and lovers in and around New York City. Artists like the late Dash Snow and Dan Colen regularly make appearances in his images.
In recent years, McGinley’s practice has expanded beyond his early, free‑wheeling snapshots into bodies of work that fuse landscape, figuration, and a thoughtful contemplation of the human form. His Paradiso series, shot in upstate New York during the fall and winter seasons, presents nude figures against elemental wilderness. This series echoes the freedom, spontaneity, and intimacy of his early Vermont road trips and summer photographs, yet it does so with a more deliberate compositional rigor.
"Typha" illustrates a euphoric figure among dried reeds and bushes. Water splashes and sparkles around him, and despite the visual movement, there is a lyrical stillness in the image. The photograph, as much of McGinley's work, blurs the line between candid capture and constructed tableau.
Reflecting a meticulous engagement with composition and the character of both place and person, this series preserves the spontaneity of McGinley’s signature style while advancing a more deliberate, almost classical study of body and terrain.
While McGinley established his photographic reputation in the early 2000s, he has gradually evolved into one of the most sought-after portrait photographers. Today, his work regularly appears in magazines including Vanity Fair and the New York Times magazine.
