SOPHIE CALLE "ORPHAN" 1994
Sophie Calle (born 1953) is an internationally acclaimed French contemporary artist.
Highly conceptual in her approach, the artist’s projects often begin with material from her own life and imagination. Since the 1970s, her practice has engaged with the boundaries of private versus public consciousness.
Calle’s work is ambitious and interdisciplinary, often taking the form of books and installations that combine photography, video, text, and participatory performance. She returns to themes of intimacy and absence, revealing vulnerability on her own terms.
"Orphan" is a poignant example of the artist's inquiry into death, loss, and departure. The photograph features a close crop of a black and white checkered tombstone with an inscription plaque that reads, 'Orphan.'
Throughout her prolific career, she has continued to explore themes of grief, often incorporating gravesites as a recurring motif. The tombstones serve as tangible representations of death, symbolizing the elusive and lingering melancholy of grief and absence.
In 2017, Calle presented 'Here Lies the Secrets of the Green-Wood Cemetery,' an interactive installation on display for 25 years to follow.
Calle's installations, performances, and retrospective exhibitions have been shown internationally and her work belongs in major collections including the Tate and the Museum of Modern Art.
