TONY SCHERMAN “BANQUO'S FUNERAL" 1996

Tony Scherman (1950-2023) is one of Canada's the most distinctive artists. He is renowned internationally for his encaustic paintings, a notoriously difficult medium to work in.

Scherman's allusions to both world and art history, are constants throughout his oeuvre. While his moody palette and sumptuous portraits (whether contemporary, historical or allegorical) reference a range of masters, his works remain visceral and contemporary.

Throughout his career, Scherman has created a striking body of work that often portrays and considers characters from history or 20th-century literature.

This work on paper comes from Scherman's series Banquo's Funeral — a sustained meditation on the character of Banquo from Macbeth. In this series, Scherman reimagines the aftermath of Banquo’s murder, inventing a funeral that Shakespeare never stages.

The works are not literal illustrations but psychological tableaux: fractured, dreamlike scenes that dwell on guilt, memory, and the uneasy persistence of the dead. As in much of Scherman’s practice, the narrative is pared down to charged fragments — faces, gestures, ceremonial details — allowing the historical and theatrical subject to feel immediate, intimate, and disquietingly present.

This work on paper depicts a feeling present at the funeral. It could be Banquo's soul leaving his body, or a distressed guest in anguish. With blue, teal, and red hues fading into a textured page, this work is hauntingly enticing.

Scherman’s work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
