CHARLES PACHTER "ROSE WINDOW" LITHO, 1964
Charles Pacher (b. 1942, Toronto), is widely recognized as Canada’s most renowned Pop artist, cherished for transforming national icons - mounties, moose, hockey players, maple leaves, streetcars and more into colourful, irreverent and playful works.
In the 1960s Pachter's work was characterized by emotive, even brooding, moods evocative of the Expressionist approach. "Rose Window" is a striking example from this era, and also demonstrates Pachter’s abilities in lithographic techniques. He embraced this medium for its ability to produce texture and subtlety.
In 1964 Pachter began a two-year Master of Fine Arts at the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Michigan. There he became skilled in a wide range of printmaking techniques including paper-making, typesetting, etching, silkscreen, and book design. He also mastered lithography, a medium that would become central to his work for the next five years. Returning to Toronto, Pachter would establish his own print-making studio and press in his basement on Shaw Street.
"Rose Window" is fine example of one of his hand-printed works from the first chapter of his career.
Today Charles Pachter's work can be found in numerous public and corporate collections including the AGO, the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal, Harvard and McGill Universities, the Portrait Gallery of Canada, Coca Cola, CIBC and Canada Trust to mention a few.
